April 10, 2018: Innovative Approaches to School Nutrition

  • Description: School based nutrition education is an important component of the educational experience. In addition, nutrition education should expand outside of the classroom and needs to involve multiple areas of communication to promote lifelong, healthful eating habits. Heather has the unique perspective of working with students and House Parents at the Milton Hershey School as well as student family "sponsors".  She educates students, house parents and low income families on food budgets, meal planning, and healthy cooking techniques to improve the wellbeing of elementary and middle school age children. April 24, 2018: Transforming the Mindset of Hunger to Better Serve the Underserved

  • Description: 7 years ago Clancy learned that we have the ability to transform the health of our next generation by replacing common misconceptions of poverty with truth and compassion. Clancy has acknowledged her personal misconceptions with Congress and now uses her voice to deflate the stigma associated with hunger. Clancy will dispel top misconceptions regarding hunger, poverty, and food assistance so we can better serve the underserved in our nation.

May 8, 2018: Community Collaboration: The Secret to Winning the War Against Hunger

  • Description: 42 million Americans cannot afford to buy fruits and vegetables. Yet, most public health educators and healthcare professionals promote the impractical consumption of produce for disease prevention and management. Clancy will discuss why promoting broccoli and other vegetables to prevent diabetes does not work for a patient who doesn’t know where his next meal is coming from and strategies that improve patient’s health status. For many patients, it isn’t about the broccoli but access to a steady supply of food first.
